Environmental Impacts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

Environmental Impacts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

CNN Morning News, 8 September 2005

Environmental impacts of pumping water into the nearby Lake Pontchartin and the Mississippi River in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was the subject of a live interview with Article 13's Dr Paul Toyne.  The scale of the disaster was discussed as was the uncertainty of the impacts.

Dr Toyne described how some of the known pollutants such as heavy metals like lead would affect the Lake's ecosystems by being absorbed into the food chain and potentially killing small invertebrates, whilst causing potential long-term health risks to alligators.  Returning the Lake to its pre-hurricane state could take many years and Dr Toyne recommended careful monitoring to ensure impacts to both wildlife and human health were kept to a minimum.
