Camelot - CSR in 2020? - stakeholder workshop on future scenarios...
Client challenge
Camelot, the licensed operator of the UK national lottery, has the core business objective of maximising returns to the Good Causes designated by the Government in the most efficient and socially responsible way. With their current licence due to expire, Camelot had to prepare a strong forward-looking submission to ensure success in re-bidding for the National Lottery licence up to 2019.
As part of this process, Camelot had to consider what the key issues might be for society between now and 2020 and use these insights to demonstrate their understanding of the future CSR environment and their capabilities to meet society’s expectations. To make this strategic thinking possible, Camelot commissioned Article 13 to bring together a group of senior opinion formers from across sectors to discuss their views on the likely ‘hot topics’ for CSR in the period up to 2020.
What did we do?
Article 13 identified and invited a select group of senior opinion formers to a visioning workshop, using its extensive networks. The participants were drawn from a range of sectors in the business, government and non-governmental arenas. Article 13 designed the process and materials, arranged the logistics, facilitated the event, wrote up the transcript and prepared a report and summary of the main/interesting perspectives.
The primary aim of the event was to identify the major issues for society, and hence for responsible business in general, in the next 15 years. Participants were given stimulus materials to review and consider prior to the event. As a result, Article 13 was able to design a process that stretched participants’ thinking. The workshop process started out with the group looking at a series of trends prepared by the Henley Centre, identifying a number of additional trends and highlighting the issues arising in connection with all the trends. The group then delved into the issue of how these trends might impact on business and its ability to act responsibly.
The workshop produced some very interesting perspectives which Article 13 summarised and presented to the client in report form.
How did we break the cycle?
Article 13 delivered true senior opinion formers to the meeting through its extensive networks. By using skilled facilitation, the Article 13 team was able to galvanise this very diverse group of people to deliver very innovative insights into what CSR would look like in 15-20 years.
