Romec - social inclusion and diversity audit and policy development

Client challenge

Romec was in the process of preparing a bid for a new client contract and recognised the need to audit its activities in the realm of social inclusion and diversity to ensure its processes and practices were clearly articulated in their proposal.  Article 13 was commissioned to carry out this work, owing to its in-depth knowledge of the prospective client’s policies, practices and reporting approach, as well as the recent and ongoing work the company had carried out on social inclusion.

What did we do?

Article 13 undertook a ‘where are we now’ audit to provide an evidence base for the interim development of a social inclusion and diversity policy.  Work commenced with a thorough review of the prospective client’s own social inclusion and diversity policy, position and metrics.  The findings were summarised for incorporation in the final report and to provide guidance in the preparation of the interview guide.

The next stage of its activity involved Article 13 carrying out ten semi-structured interviews with Romec personnel who were proposed by the Romec team.  Based on stories and evidence coming out of these interviews, an initial policy was developed for social inclusion and diversity based on what the client does now.  This draft policy was combined with a critique of interview findings and the overview of the prospective client’s policies and practices and presented to the client in report form.

Article 13 reiterated its earlier caveat that the findings and stories uncovered at this point in its work would be skewed to those parts of the business that were interviewed, because a representative sample of employees had not been canvassed and nor had a desk-based audit of the client’s policies been undertaken.  It is envisaged by both the client and Article 13 that this activity will take place in the next stage of the project.  Recommendations on the way forward for developing an integrated CSR framework, policy and programme of activities were incorporated in the final report of findings from the initial work on social inclusion and diversity.

Innovation PLUS

Article 13 built on its practical experience of social inclusion and diversity issues and policies in UK workplaces to develop an interim approach, capturing employee stories and resonating with approaches used by potential clients.  Article 13 also proposed recommendations on how to continue with this initial phase of work.
