Corporate social responsibility, governance, substainable development The issues in CSR

Part of our commitment to advocacy is to opinion-form for corporate social responsibility – identifying the key issues and emerging trends in CSR and sustainability through our work with international business and government, our original research and strong networks.  We are also active contributors to literature and conferences.

In this section, you will find the best of this information distilled for you in the distinctive Article 13 way.  Every few months we focus on an emerging or developing trend and analyse the implications and opportunities for business and government.  We aim to be edgy, provocative and innovative, exploring unexpected paths that individuals and organisations might follow to ‘break the cycle’.

In this update...

We look at how organisations are minimising their dependence on fossil fuels, particularly within the building sector.  We explore how this translates into action along the value chain as organisations increasingly look to their suppliers for assistance, not only in reducing their own impact, but also those of the customers who puchase the goods and services they produce.

CSR best practice case studies

Our CSR case studies look at a range of fiery issues.  From Redrow and CEMEX's focus on sustainable housing for residents to ScotAsh's growing business developing more sustainable building products from coal fired power station residue.  Finally we look at Stora Enso's approach to potentially heated discussions regarding its forestry operations in the developing world …

Feedback and your views...

Each quarter we ask what you think about a particular topic. Last update we asked, “What do you think is the best way to manage water issues?” We make no claims for the statistical validity of the results of our website polls, but they always give us things to think about and we do monitor what you tell us, so your vote does count!

The results this quarter were strongly in favour of the introduction of water allocations under a cap and trade system with 58.5% of the votes. Support for market intervention made up a further 31.7%, with respondents feeling that water allocations should be negotiated between geographies.  Only 9.8% of respondents felt that the best option was to leave it to the market to regulate as water risk becomes factored into investment decisions.
