Case studies
As part of our commitment to work actively against corruption and to share best practice of building transparency, Article 13 has produced and published five best practice case studies looking at building transparency and combating corruption.
In recent years, Ford has been recognised as an industry leader for business responsibility. The company has made major wide scale changes to its ways of working in order to integrate a variety of ethical codes/standards, sustainability initiatives and transparency/anti-corruption policies throughout the business. This case study draws on desk-based research and an interview with David Berdish, the Manager of Sustainable Business Development for Ford Motor Company.
Nigeria's economy is heavily dependent on the exploration, production and trade in oil and it is reported that Shell accounts for 40% of Nigeria's total petroleum production. Corruption is rife in day-to-day business transactions and Shell does not have a very strong reputation in the area. Consequently, Shell is implementing a range of initiatives and policies across its Nigerian operations, supply chain and its business model to improve transparency and combat corruption. To do this, Shell is working in close collaboration with NGOs and communicating its new approaches widely.
Since facing a serious corruption scandal, Siemens AG - Europe's largest engineering conglomerate - has implemented a new anti-corruption programme which is contributing to significant changes in leadership culture, structure and communications. Its actions have touched on governance, compliance, policies and communication. Challenges that have arisen during this process have included achieving full integration and its facing up to its poor track record from the past.
Vodafone Group, a UK-based mobile network operator, recognises the implications its widescale operations have on a diverse number of stakeholders and has, therefore, made considerable changes to the way its business operates. The company places high strategic importance on social responsibility, transparency and anti-corruption. Vodafone has become a well recognised name at recent conferences on business transparency, anti-corruption and communicating reporting.
Suez Environment, one of the world's leading water companies, integrates sustainable development into its business strategy and is highly aware of the influence that its activities have on local communities and the environment. It is widely recognised that corruption drains water resources and Suez Environment strives to act responsibly and ethically to maintain drinkable, accessible and affordable water supplies.
